China publishes timeline of international COVID-19 cooperation

A timeline of China's response to the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) was released on Monday by Xinhua News Agency.

Based on media reports and information from the National Health Commission (NHC), scientific research institutions and other departments, the timeline offers a glimpse of China's efforts in releasing information, sharing epidemic prevention and control experience, and advancing international exchanges and cooperation.

The major events from late December 2019 to March 2020 were recorded.

Viruses know no borders and they don't care about your ethnicity. The COVID-19 epidemic is a major public health emergency that has spread the fastest, caused the most extensive infections and been the hardest to contain since the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, the document said.

With the joint efforts of the whole nation, the positive trend in preventing and controlling the epidemic in China has been constantly consolidated and expanded, and the restoration of normal production and daily life has been quickened, according to the timeline.

The timeline noted a "formidable challenge" to global public health security as the pandemic has recently been spreading rapidly in the world.

According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), COVID-19 has affected more than 200 countries and regions with over 1.13 million confirmed cases by Sunday.

Here are the highlights from the timeline:

January 3, 2020

China started to regularly communicate with the WHO, relevant countries and regional organizations, and China's Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan regarding the outbreak.

January 4, 2020

Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC) shared information about the outbreak with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of the U.S. Both sides agreed to keep close contact on information communication and technical cooperation.

January 9, 2020

China shared preliminary progress made in the etiological identification of COVID-19 with WHO.

January 10, 2020

China CDC reported sequence information of the novel coronavirus nucleic acid detection primer probe to WHO.

January 12, 2020

NHC shared genomic sequence information of the novel coronavirus with WHO.

January 22, 2020

The National Genomics Data Center of China launched the 2019 novel coronavirus database to release genome and variation analysis information of the novel coronavirus.

February 8, 2020

NHC reported plans including prevention and control, treatment and monitoring to Chinese embassies and consulates abroad.

February 10, 2020

An advance WHO team arrived in Beijing.

February 16, 2020

A joint China and WHO expert team started a nine-day field investigation in Beijing, Chengdu, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Wuhan.

February 18, 2020

Experts from the China-WHO joint team went to Guangdong and Sichuan for a three-day on-site investigation.

February 22, 2020

Members of the China-WHO joint team visited Wuhan to inspect the work being done there.
