President Xi Jinping visited central China's Hunan Province on Wednesday, with poverty alleviation high on his agenda.

Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, went to a small village with only 529 people.

Shazhou village, located in the mountainous region in Hunan's Chenzhou city, borders Jiangxi and Guangdong provinces.

The village had 30 households in financial straits.

In 2018, the whole village was lifted out of poverty through rural tourism, and the average annual income of people there reached 13,840 yuan ( around 2,046 U.S. dollars) last year.

The tourism sector also created more than 350 jobs for villagers.

Xi inspected the progress in poverty alleviation and urged local officials and people to consolidate these achievements.

China has vowed to end poverty by 2020 as planned despite COVID-19.

Speaking at a symposium on poverty alleviation in March, Xi said the goal a "solemn pledge" made by the CPC Central Committee to the Chinese people.

Xi said the coronavirus epidemic has brought about new challenges to accomplish the remaining poverty alleviation tasks, and he urged Party committees and governments at all levels to overcome adverse impacts of the epidemic and secure a complete victory of the battle against poverty.

The country saw the number of impoverished rural residents decline from nearly 100 million in late 2012 to 5.51 million by the end of 2019, according to data from China's National Bureau of Statistics. The proportion of rural residents living below the poverty line fell from 10.2 percent in 2012 to 0.6 percent last year.

On Wednesday, Xi also visited other places in Shazhou village, including a revolution-themed exhibition hall, a village service center, a clinic, a modern agricultural tourism demonstration base, a primary school, and some villagers' homes.
