China's nationwide reading campaign is proving successful and the country's sales channels for books are undergoing reform amid the global COVID-19 pandemic, experts and officials said at a conference held by the China Publishing Group Corporation (CPG) on Friday.

Under the shadow of the pandemic, Chinese people have been showing more interest in reading books, especially excellent literatary works such as classic Chinese works, said Huang Zhijian, president of CPG.

Meanwhile, the book market has been expanding its various channels such as online bookstores, livestreaming and physical bookstores. In 2020, online channels accounted for more than 80 percent of the industry sales due to the outbreak of COVID-19, Zang Yongqing, president of People's Literature Publishing House, said at the conference.

The year 2021 marks the 19th anniversary of the establishment of CPG. As China's largest and most influential trade and professional publishing group, CPG has continued publishing books that are closely related to current social issues including epidemic prevention and control, China's anti-poverty efforts and the 70th anniversary of the Chinese People's Volunteer Army entering the Korean War (1950-53).

According to Chen, CPG will maintain its top position in the book publishing industry in China with the aim to help build the country into a cultural power. It will also further explore markets overseas, including inviting overseas sinologists and experts on Chinese issues to improve the quality of multilingual translation, upgrading copyright cooperation and developing a number of international editorial offices, according to Huang.
